Black Identity and Racism Collide in Brazil
Last summer 2013 I wanted and needed to go to the land of samba, soccer, and feijoada. Brasilia, full of wonderful people and the self-proclaimed racial democracy of the world welcomed me with open arms. While there, I roomed with such a great group of Brasilians who kept it real about the corruption in politics, poverty, and racism in Brasil.
This article here gave a one liner that Critical Race Theorist would nod and jive to as Carlos Alberto David notes “Racism in Brazil is very sophisticated and structured,” says David. “The racism here is not physical. It works on people psychologically.”
The rootedness of structural and systematic racism may be better positioned as a technology being able to grow more sophisticated over time.
